Ottawa's Archbishop re. The Ottawa Catholic School Board allowing schools to fly the rainbow (gay pride) flag during the months of June ( May 28, 2021)

ARCHBISHOP’S MESSAGE

May 28, 2021

Decision difficult to understand

Last Tuesday, May 25, the Trustees of the Ottawa Catholic School Board voted 9-1 in favor of a motion to allow schools to fly the rainbow (gay pride) flag during the months of June. This decision, despite my opposition, leaves me confused and disappointed. Many of you share my pain and suffering. I am very aware of this. I have received many e-mails from parents, teachers, and members of our Catholic community who have expressed their displeasure and incomprehension about this important decision that goes against the teaching of the Church. For some, the reactions have been very strong. Faced with this reality, many questions arise. How should we react? What are we to understand about the current state of our Catholic schools in Ontario?

One thing is certain. It is never wise to react and make decisions when emotions are still high. We risk saying hurtful words, judging too quickly with condemning comments, or making hasty and unreflective decisions. As Archbishop, I must exercise my leadership with wisdom and serenity. It seems to me essential to take actions that will give life and not destroy it. Therefore, I need time. Time to calm the emotions and time to acquire the facts to better understand the state of things. Time to consult and ask all the necessary questions.

It is important for you to know that I have no legal authority over Catholic schools or school trustees. The province funds and controls our Catholic schools. Trustees are elected by the people. I can only exert my influence on religious education and moral issues. I did this at the Trustees’ meeting itself. You can find my presentation on the diocesan website.

I understand that this is just one of many school boards in our archdiocese. But you can be sure that the pressure to do this, as in many other school boards in Ontario, is forcing the leaders of all our Catholic schools to reflect and take a stand. For those who feel discouraged by these facts, do not allow yourselves to be drawn into the pit of despair. Instead, turn your attention to the good that exists. How can we nurture and strengthen that which is good?

Let us remember that as a Church we have a mission to see to the well-being of all souls. The thousands of young people in our Catholic schools are among those souls and deserve the best. I believe that more than ever they need our presence and witness to grow in faith. It would be easy to give up and declare defeat. Instead, the Spirit of Pentecost gives us courage, guidance and wisdom to bring about the Kingdom of God. Jesus Christ never told us that it would be easy.

Rest assured that I am personally committed to accompanying the stakeholders at all levels to ensure Catholicity in our schools. It will be long and hard work, but necessary. Prayerfully, together we will succeed. There are many good people who are well intentioned in our school boards. It is a matter of accompanying them well. Perhaps we have missed the mark in this regard. I think it is important to recognize where, as a Church, we have not done everything possible to educate, train and prepare people for mission. It is never too late to start.

Please continue to pray for me, as I do for you.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us.

 Saint Joseph, pray for us.

X Marcel

Ralph Martin - An Appeal to Clergy

Downtown yesterday - Mass at Saint Pat's and praying at the prayer corner - Thank you God!

When I arrived at the corner of the Bank and Sparks at 11:30 there were several others faithfully praying, Wanda, James, Gilles... It was a beautiful day ( I didn't have to wear my winter coat with the hood hanging off haha )

At noon I made my way to Saint Pat's for mass at 12:15. Thank you Jesus for this.

I had initially planned to visit the Gift Shop, however, it was closed so I returned to the corner and joined several others in prayer, Wiesia ( from St. Hyacinth Parish ), Gaetana, Mimi......

Alexandre who is pro-choice dropped by for a chat. (we told him we were praying but he wanted to talk) It was a good dialogue and when he left we said we would pray for one another

At 2:30 I left and Wiesia and Gaetana continued to pray but before I left we sang this little polish song.

Jezu Ufam Tobie!

A mini pilgrimage downtown today. Thank you God for everything!

When you take the bus and the train downtown to pray at the abortion site ( as close as we are permitted anyways) it's a great opportunity I find, to make the journey into a mini-pilgrimage. I find it so peaceful praying on the bus and on the train  ( maybe too peaceful cause sometimes I  doze off )

This afternoon,  I arrived at the public prayer corner at approximately 3:30, and I joined in prayer with the three or four souls who were already there. We pray for an end to abortion. We pray for the babies, their moms, and their dads......for the abortionists. We pray that mothers will change their minds and choose life and if they don't we pray for their healing;  physical, spiritual, and psychological because without a doubt for most of them there will be much sadness, sorrow,  guilt, and depression. 'God loves when we pray.

                                                        A few photos I took

These folks were at the vigil site when I arrived at approximately 3:30 and stayed till about 5:30

                            Gilles                                      Helena                                                      Ann

Helena and Richard

After that, I sat on a nearby bench ( thank you God for the seat, my legs were starting to give out)) and as I was about to get up and head to the train station I looked up and saw my little sister Barb who had just left her Government job downtown.
That was a dainty for sure because a minute later I would have been gone

After that, we walked  to the Rideau Centre and Barb bought us a delicious vegan dinner

And the best part is that Mother Mary was with us the whole time
( well Mary is always with us but today was special because Barb received a beautiful dainty from her.)

Barb had been searching for this beautiful image for a long time. Today after mass at Saint Pat's she thought she would try again and there in the Gift Shop she found Mary and baby Jesus and the lamb which incidentally had just arrived!

Alleluia!!!

MOTHER TERESA: NO GREATER LOVE,

The newest documentary film from the Knights of Columbus will be premiered in Ontario theatres this Nov. 2 and 3 (Waterloo, Kingston, London, Orleans, Kitchener, St. Catharines, Kanata, Whitby and Caledon).

The film premiered in the U.S. earlier this month and was a smashing box-office success. In fact, it earned more than $1.2 million in ticket sales and Supreme Knight Patrick Kelly announced (read it here) that the Knights would allocate all of the revenue it receives from ticket sales to charitable purposes and efforts that advance the legacy of Mother Teresa.

The documentary was released to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Mother Teresa’s passing. Not only is the film – and its main protagonists – inspiring, but it also features Fr. Brian Kolodiejchuk, a native of Winnipeg, Sr. Bernice (based in Toronto) who explains how he and Mother dodged bullets repeatedly to build bridges with criminals and it was co-directed by a Canadian from Oshawa.

The documentary is sure to inspire – especially the youth who may not know that much about Mother and the religious communities her work inspired.

The trailer – and more information – is available here: https://www.motherteresamovie.com/

If you wish to watch the documentary before November 2, please contact

Knowledgeable persons who were intimately involved with the production of the film:

Father Brian Kolodiejchuk (featured in the film), a member of the Missionaries of Charity Fathers, has spent the past 17 years gathering evidence and data to make the case for Mother Teresa to be declared a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.

David Naglieri (director) - David is an Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker and television producer. He is renowned for his 2016 feature-length documentary: Liberating a Continent; John Paul II and the Fall of Communism, which earned five Emmy nominations. He previously worked at Salt + Light Media, before joining the Knights in New Haven, Connecticut.

Marc Boudignon (co-director) – Marc is an accomplished director who has worked with the Knights of Columbus on numerous projects and, previously, at Salt + Light Media. He is based out of Oshawa, Ont.

We are hopeful both Catholics and well beyond – will show up in large numbers and demonstrate to cinema landlords and others in the community that we, Catholics in Canada, are a (loving) force in the community...and that we’re happy to play a part in the promotion of charity (and life) for the benefit of all!

Grandma Growing Up: The Present / Thanksgiving 2022

Father Rob's homily today inspired me to post this again
( taken from my Grandma Growing Up blog )

Grandma Growing Up: The Present

It was a gift like no other. It was passed down to me from mommy and daddy but also from my grandparents and my great-grandparents

I received it early on and it has always stayed with me. I couldn’t, wouldn’t let it out of my sight, so I took it with me everywhere I went. It was with me when I slept when I played when I helped mommy and daddy when I was happy and when I was sad, during hard times, during happy times, when the world made sense and when it didn’t: It WAS, it IS the gift of my FAITH
