1947 Marian Congress, June 18-June 22, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

1947 Marian Congress,  June 18-June 22, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

For Mama Mary

It was to celebrate the centenary of the Archdiocese of Ottawa and to pray for lasting peace in the world. The Message of the Marian Congress: Intercession with the Mother of God to obtain from her Divine Son a Lasting World Peace, and this message was the keynote of all the addresses delivered by world known prelates.

After the Congress many Cardinals and Bishops wrote letters
thanking Archbishop Vachon and the Faithful Catholics of Ottawa.
Below is Cardinal Mindszenty's letter

Cardinal Mindszenty was arrested by the Communists in Budapest on  December 26, 1948 and that began twenty-three long years of persecution, suffering and enforced isolation. Throughout his ordeals, he was unwavering in his faith, hope and love of God.

The Main site of the Congress was at
Lansdowne Park although the opening events were held at Notre Dame Cathedral.

My knowledge of the Congress was initially just bits of information I received from my parents. My father attended many of the Congress events including, I believe 1. The opening ceremony which took place at Notre Dame Cathedral and the 2.closing Mass at Lansdowne Par that was "packed to the rafters" (his own words.)  I think he had a few hot dogs in between.

As I grew up, I began to take an interest in history, especially local history, and I often wondered why we never heard anything about this part of Canadian History at school or at church even. When I was young, I didn't care that much, really, but as I grew older, I wanted to know more about the events of that week.  An Internet search wasn't very helpful, so I took my search further and went to the archives of several newspapers including the Ottawa Journal and the Ottawa Citizen to see what I could find out. As I read article after article, I was absolutely amazed at the magnitude of this event. I was moved by the sincere and heartfelt hospitality shown to the pilgrims by the Prime MinisterMembers of ParliamentGovernor Generalthe Mayor etc. The more I read, the more I wanted to know, so I kept on going on and I discovered a myriad of information. I can't even begin to imagine the preparation that went into organizing the Congress.

3 On the 20th of June 1947 the Catholic Herald reported that at least 200,000 pilgrims were present in Ottawa for the opening of the Congress and that included Nine Cardinals:

Viscount Alexander of Tunis, Governor-General of Canada, welcomed the Papal Legate

Among the other distinguished members of the Canadian Government who will assist at functions during the Congress, apart from Viscount Alexander of Tunis, Governor-General of Canada are McKenzie King, Prime Minister of Canada,, Minister James Joseph McCann Minister of National Revenue. Minister of Justice. Louis Saint Laurent

The Pope, in a letter of good wishes to the Papal Legate, Cardinal McGuigan, said:
" Make liberty the keynote of your address. It is not liberty," the Pope added, " if one envisages unbridled powers to achieve all ends: It is not liberty that iniquity should go unpunished. Truth is the mother of liberty. Truth is light and glory." He invited all participating in the Congress to fight against those who would " adulterate " liberty, the hope of salvation of the human race."

4 At 3 p.m. on Wednesday the Cardinal Legate arrived at the Cathedral in Ottawa and the Congress opened with an address of welcome read by Mgr. Vachon, Archbishop of Ottawa.

The week concluded with a Mass at Lansdowne Park and ended with what the Catholic Northwest Progress newspaper called “the greatest fireworks display ever held in Canada” depicting scenes in the life of the Blessed Virgin.

5 And in between There here was unforgettable splendor as at the great dinner Saturday night at the Chateau Laurier.  And there was the beautiful simplicity of so many families having picnics in their cars while stuck in traffic or picnicking and resting amid the June foliage of the parkway and on boulevards. Many slept under the stars at Lansdowne: some because they had no accommodation, others because they wanted to be close to the morning celebrations . There were scores of volunteers and all across the city there are numerous stories of people helping one another.

Although it rained early on in the week, the weather was magnificent later on and for the spectacular closing ceremonies. On Wednesday in a special statement to the Ottawa Citizen The strong faith of the archbishop was evident when he said “I am confident Almighty God will bless us with fine weather” One might have been skeptical of this statement because it had been raining every day for a month before the Congress began.

Sunday’s procession of the Blessed Sacrament preceded by 26 beautiful religious floats and 1,000 maids of honor were viewed by spectators exceeding 200,000 in number along a route extending from MacKenzie Avenue via the Driveway to Lansdowne Park . Anxious crowds had lined both sides of the driveway two hours previously. One RCMP officer estimated that more than 20,000 people had surged unto

6 A few days after the conclusion of the Congress, J. Frank Williams (Canadian Correspondent , N.C.W.C News Service The Catholic Northwest Progress, Seattle Washington ) reported that Ottawa doubled in size as a tremendous throng of Pilgrims, led by members of the Hierarchy from five continents, assisted in the Marian Consecration (This act of consecration was recited before a great crowd at the 155-foot- high Lansdowne Park outdoor altar during Sunday’s closing Pontifical mass. ) Louis St. Laurent, Canadian Secretary of State for External Affairs read the Act in French and Minister James Joseph McCann Minister of National Revenue., read it in English His Holiness Pope Pius XII spoke to the Congress from Vatican City. and his message was carried across all the major radio networks across Canada. The Pontiff described the consecration of the country to Mary as its crowning act. In his closing remarks the Pontiff recalled that Canada had been the home of intrepid missionaries since the days of Jacques Cartier and he called on the people of Canada to continue their traditional work of charity to other countries and to maintain their traditions of faith against all who would seek to undermine these traditions.

Fast forward to six years ago, when Ottawa Resident Dennis Girard came across a French French Documentary  Congrès Marial, Ottawa, juin 1947  on YouTube.  He was quite surprised by it because he had never  heard about this Historic Event.  He had been searching for something entirely different when he came across the video, which, just a year or two before ( Nov 3, 2014 ) had  been uploaded to YouTube. Dennis and his wife  Angelina met with the Archbishop of Ottawa, Terrence Prendergast as well as Bishop Tremblay from Cap de la Madelaine.  Before you know it, an English video was in the works, and put in motion were plans to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the Congress in the year 2017

On Mother's Day, 2017 the pilgrim statue from Cap de la Madeleine, subsequent to a series of seemingly Divinely orchestrated happenings, was installed at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Ottawa and the Archdiocese of Ottawa began to commemorate the Congress with a series of special celebrations 6

Text of the Consecration from the memoirs of Archbishop Vachon

O Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, Help of Christians, who art victorious in all God`s battles, we humbly prostrate ourselves before thy throne, confident that we will receive mercy, grace and bountiful assistance and protection in the present calamity, not through our own inadequate merits, but solely through the great goodness of thy Maternal Heart

`It is in Thine Honor that we prepared the Great Congress to celebrate the centenary of the erection of this Diocese with the hope that you will be moved to pity by the sight of the widespread material and moral ruin. O Mother of Mercy, obtain peace for us from God, and above all, procure for us those graces, which prepare, establish and ensure the peace! O Queen of Peace, give to the world the peace for which all men long, peace in the truth, justice and charity of Christ.

“Obtain for the Holy Church of God peace and complete freedom ; stay the rising flood of modern paganism; enkindle in the faithful the life of purity, the practice of Christian virtues, and an apostolic zeal, so that the servants of God may increase in holiness and in number.

“Lastly, as the Church and the entire human race were consecrated to the Sacred Heart of thy Divine Son, so that by placing all hope in Him, He might become for them the pledge of Victory and Salvation, so do we now and forever consecrate ourselves to thy Immaculate Heart, O Blessed Mother and Queen of the World, that thy love and thy protection may hasten the triumph of the Kingdom of God, and all nations, at peace with one another and with God may proclaim thee blest and chant with thee from pole to pole, the eternal Magnificat of glory , love and gratitude to the Heart of Jesus, in Whom alone may be found the blessings of truth, of life, and of Heavenly Peace, Amen “

Five Reasons Why Christians Are Public Enemy No. 1| National Catholic Register: COMMENTARY: Any fantasy ideology is utterly at odds with the Christian religion.
Five Reasons Why Christians Are Public Enemy No. 1

COMMENTARY: Any fantasy ideology is utterly at odds with the Christian religion.

Fellow Christians, do you ever feel like we are in the crosshairs of all sorts of ideological groups? I sure do. I’ve had to think about this a lot! And I think I’ve figured out a pattern that explains why we are always in hot water with the “Latest and Greatest and Ultimate Ideological Fad.”

I first discovered this pattern in my study of the Sexual Revolution.

Step 1: Somebody sells the public on a utopian ideal, a heaven on Earth, something that sounds appealing but is utterly impossible. Even good ideas and noble goals can be corrupted by being turned into utopian ideologies. For instance, the utopian dream of the communists is the workers’ paradise of perfect economic and social equality. Now, we can eliminate some inequality, but we will never have perfect equality in every dimension. That’s completely impossible.

Some environmentalists want to eliminate all pollution, all carbon footprints. Not possible. Reduce pollution? Sure, we can do that. But eliminate it? not possible.

Some in the public health establishment want to eliminate all cases of COVID. Reduce the number of cases? Sure. Eliminate them all? Not possible.

And of course, the Sexual Revolution is all about creating a sexual heaven on Earth, where every adult can have all the sex they want and nothing bad ever happens.

Any fantasy ideology is utterly at odds with the Christian religion. Let’s review the five elements to see why.

1. A fantasy ideology first promises heaven on Earth. But Jesus never promised us heaven on earth. As a matter of fact, he promised us persecution and trouble. He told us to “take up your cross and come follow me.” He told us to abandon our families, our possessions and our reputations, anything that interferes with the cross. Jesus does not promise heaven on earth. He promises heaven in heaven.

2. The fantasy ideology presents the need for a savior class, which can bring about this heaven on earth. Jesus doesn’t allow us to go looking for a savior class. He is the one and only savior. The Christian religion specifically forbids us from assigning the title of “savior” to anyone but Jesus.

3. The savior class can save us if only we give them enough power to achieve the impossible task they have set for us. As Christians, we are not allowed to take this deal. We are supposed to render unto God what is God’s and unto Caesar only what is Caesar’s. It should go without saying that we are not allowed to render unto the political or technocratic elites unlimited power. We owe the experts in any field a respectful hearing. We don’t owe them unquestioned obedience. In fact, they owe us respectful answers to our questions and concerns. At the end of the day, the experts in public health or in so-called sexual health or climate science or the global economy are ordinary citizens just like the rest of us.

To make Christians even more troublesome to power elites, we have this crazy idea that people with power do not get to do whatever they want. The guy at the top of the totem pole does not get to do whatever he can get away with. The history of Christianity is littered (literally) with the bodies of people who confronted people in power on this point. This, more than anything else, has gotten Christians into trouble with ruling classes down through the ages.

4. Fantasy ideologies need unlimited propaganda. Let’s be clear: Propaganda is a form of deception. When an ideology gives itself permission to deceive in order to achieve the dream, the faithful Christian needs to object. Christianity holds that there is such a thing as truth, that truth can be discovered both through reason and revelation and that everyone has a responsibility to live in the truth.

5. Finally, the fantasy ideology requires someone to blame when things don’t go according to plan. But the Christian religion specifically forbids us to scapegoat people. Because we believe in original sin, we have no expectation that we could cure the human race of all evil if we could just get rid of Those Bad People Over There. When the subject is sin, we are all in it together. As Solzhenitsyn famously said, “The line between good and evil runs within every human heart.” There are degrees of personal wrongdoing of course. There are better and worse societies, of course. But no matter how much improvement we might make, we will never achieve perfection. Promising that we will, somehow, someday do so, is setting us up for failure and disappointment.

People of faith are the ones standing in the way of whatever the fantasy ideology of the moment happens to be. When a new ideology breaks out, we are the ones scratching our heads, saying, “That doesn’t sound right.”

We are the ones who are willing to say: “If someone promises heaven on Earth, don’t take the bait. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably neither good nor true.”

And that is why Christians are public enemy No. 1
